Leon Spinks was an American heavyweight boxer best known for his stunning 1978 upset victory over Muhammad Ali, winning the world heavyweight title in only his eighth professional fight. An Olympic gold medallist from the 1976 Games, Spinks fought with an unorthodox, aggressive style and tremendous determination. Though his reign was brief—losing the rematch to Ali later that year—Spinks remained a memorable and respected figure in boxing history for his remarkable rise and his spirited personality.
